Shige Higashi, Publisher and Editor of Cultural News

Recommendation to Cultural News

Eiko Ushida, President, Teachers of Japanese in Southern California (2008-2010)

The Cultural News is a valuable resource for us to find out what is happening in Japanese community in Southern California. Topics cover a wide range from well-known Japanese traditional culture such as samurai treasures to not so well-known popular culture such as “Para Para” dances. Also, I sometimes re-learn about Japanese history-something that we have never learned at school, through Cultural News. I think that this type of resource is useful for anyone who is interested in Japan and its culture.

Eiko Ushida is Lecturer of Japanese at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, UC San Diego.

Professor Sachiko Matsunaga, Director, Japanese Jtudies Center, California State University, Los Angeles

As a university professor of Japanese language and culture in Southern California, it is important for me to be aware of Japanese cultural events and performances in the area. Where do I get that information?

Cultural News!  I greatly admire Mr. Higashi¹s ability to collect a remarkable amount of information that anyone who is interested in Japanese culture and arts should not miss.  Highly recommended!

Frederik L. Schodt, Manga scholar and author

Traditional daily newspapers may be disappearing, and the ways in which we obtain our information may be changing dramatically. But there is a real need for focused periodicals, like Cultural News, that not only bring us the community news that we need, but also bring us together.

Mikko Haggott Henson, Founder of Traditional Japanese Performing Arts organization

The Cultural News is a wealth of information about Japanese cultural events in Southern California and U.S.  When I often receive inquiries from students or others who are interested in Japanese culture, the Cultural News is a valuable resource for me.

I can direct them precisely to what, where and when by reading the Cultural News. Mr. Higashi, publisher, has established a remarkable network to gather all information related to events regarding Japanese art and culture. I think if

you are interested in Japanese arts and culture becoming a member of the

Cultural News Club is a must.

Hayahiko Takase, Architect, AIA in Los Angeles

Thanks to the Cultural News, we can enrich our lives culturally, planning our schedule for the month to come. I recommend this monthly paper for everybody who are interested in Japanese Culture…. Art, Architecture, Music, Dance, etc.

Akimasa Mitsuta, Director, the Confucius Institute at the J.F. Oberlin University, Tokyo

I have known the Cultural News since 2000 when I was in the UCLA as a Paul Terasaki Professor. During my stay in LA the News helped me obtain various news about activities concerning the Japanese communities in California.

It also helped me know the trends of appreciation of the American people towards Japanese culture. Since then I have kept in touch with the editor, Mr. Higashi and it has been my great pleasure to read the News. I live in Japan now.

The News becomes an important recourse for me to understand the social situation in California. I hope the Culture News will keep being active, providing valuable news about the people and activities related to Japanese culture for the readers

Ryozo Kato, Japanese Ambassador

to the U.S.A. (October 2001-May 2008)

Thank you for letting me read a copy of Cultural News. I was impressed to see that it explains Japanese culture clearly, and includes a variety of articles that would appeal to wide range of readers. I am quite inspired and grateful of your determination to introduce Japanese culture to many people and play a great role in the cultural exchange between our countries.
